Grade 1A strong start

A THOUGHTFUL BEGINNING

What a strong first year should build

Young learners do not need to race ahead. They need a classroom that builds security, sound foundations, independence, and a lasting willingness to participate.

Belonging

Predictable routines and warm teacher guidance help children enter the room ready to listen, respond, and take a risk.

Early literacy

Alphabet knowledge, sound-symbol relationships, and careful listening prepare children for decoding and reading.

Classroom independence

Students practice following directions, taking turns, organizing materials, and completing short tasks with growing responsibility.

Joy in language

Stories, play, conversation, and practical work show children that English is something they can understand and enjoy.

THE FIRST WEEKS

We begin with the child—not a preset pace

1
Before class

Listen and learn

We talk with the family and learn about prior experience, confidence, and readiness.

2
At the start

Build trust

Children become familiar with the teacher, the room, the routines, and the sound of the class.

3
As routines settle

Strengthen foundations

Speaking, phonics, and early reading connect through repeated, purposeful practice.

4
With growing confidence

Invite independence

Students begin to choose words, answer with detail, describe, and contribute ideas of their own.

Frequently asked questions

What families want to know

Does my child need to know the alphabet before enrolling?

No. Prior exposure is only one part of readiness. We also look at how the child listens, responds, joins a routine, and feels about participating.

How is this different from the English class at elementary school?

Hai Yin provides sustained interaction, explicit phonics instruction, reading preparation, and repeated opportunities to use language. Families can decide whether that additional depth fits their child and schedule.

Is BrightSteps appropriate for a new first grader?

Yes, when the mission is designed for the child’s stage. Early experiences emphasize observation, simple choices, hands-on work, teamwork, and short spoken responses.

How do I learn about openings and class times?

Send an inquiry or call either campus. We will discuss your child’s readiness and schedule before recommending an available class.

START A CONVERSATION

The right program begins with knowing the student.

Tell us about your child’s grade, previous experience, and schedule. A teacher will follow up to discuss placement and current options.

We use this information only to respond to your program inquiry.
